Hotplug is supposed to only be used with 2.4 kernel series. It doesn't often cause problems and I left it enabled, so the workaround is to give the "nohotplug" option to linux while booting (instead of just hitting enter or waiting for the timeout, type "linux nohotplug" at the initial tux-with-a-backpack splash screen, then hit enter).
